The Hawaiian Koa wood used to create these two watch cases comes from the celebrated "Mother of Curl" tree discovered in the early 1990's. Know only to a handful of craftspeople, its unbelievable depth of color coupled with an undulating pattern of glistening waves create a most amazing chatoyance. Both have been highlighted with Gaboon ebony, an escutcheon made of mother of pearl and abalone. The boxes are created with poplar hardwood. Planks used for the top, bottom and sides were sawn down the middle, the two pieces reversed and then reglued back into a plank. This technique, while an extra step in the build process, reduces the amount of natural stress the wood can have thereby minimizing overall movement of the piece.
The interior material used for liners and watch pillows is called “moiré” and is sourced from a small fabric company in New Orleans, Louisiana. This unique pattern is created by calendaring the material under high pressure and temperatures. It is becoming somewhat rare due to laborious process to create it.
The hinges and locks for both boxes are sourced from a small custom hinge maker in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. Originally formed in 2011 to create high quality hinges and components for bespoke high end boxes. One of his first commission uses of his hinges was a special Royal Wedding box for HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton. There is no equal in quality that I am aware of.
The box has been sealed with shellac and coated with multiple coats of wipe on polyurethane. It has a final wax coat of Renaissance micro crystalline wax. This wax was developed by a scientist from the British Museum in the 1950’s. This revolutionary formula he developed is a semi synthetic micro-crystalline fossil-origin and is entirely free of damaging acids. It remains chemically neutral and is therefore completely safe, even on vulnerable surfaces
