These curved trays are made similar to a wine barrel or round sailboat mast in that several long "planks" have been beveled at two sides and when joined together form a 4" curve. Each tray is approximately 20" long with bases about 6 1/2" wide. They are made using old growth douglas fir salvaged from the removed wainscotting of a late 1800's built home. The bases on the two clear trays are made from Wenge. The "burned" shosugiban tray's bases are made from Siberian elm from a tree cut down in Napa, Ca. to make room for Gordon Huether's 911 memorial. Exhibiting asian influences of simplicity of shape in their design, these trays are actually very time consuming to create requiring two separate jigs and sacrificial pieces to prevent the "blow out" of the trays while cutting through for the bases. I have only made three of these trays.
