This guitar stand was inspired by the shapes of the inner hull frames of the many wooden hulled vessels I have sailed and worked on since I began my apprenticeship as a wooden boat builder and the outer sides of the many acoustic guitars that have crossed my path.
The stand and deerskin pads are entirely hand made in my shop one at a time. The wood I currently use is Sapele which is harvested in West Africa, and it can be most easily found in countries such as Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ghana. It is a non-threatened species. The stand has been sealed with two coats of shellac followed by multiple hand applied coats of polyurethane with a final coat of Renaissance micro crystalline wax which minimizes finger prints.
The curved back sections and guitar cradle are thin (1/16”) laminates that have been glued over a curved jig to achieve the shapes. These shapes are glued up over a three day period using only two laminates at a time to minimize the internal stress of the piece and ultimately minimize the “spring back” of the pieces. The neck cradle piece is a multi-laminate piece design for higher strength properties than a single piece of wood would offer.
The curved design offers greater strength than a straight piece of wood much like the leaf springs on a car. It has natural springiness due to its light construction.
$ 985.00 ....shipping and packaging not included.
This stand received the "Award of Excellence" at the Sonoma Woodworker's "Artistry in Wood" exhibit 2021.
Notable musicians that have this stand in their personal collection include the late David Crosby, Neil Young and Joe Walsh
